Nigerian Customs Service Reforms Aim for Revenue Growth

During the World Customs Day event held in Abuja, Dr. Bashir Adewal Adeniyi, the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), emphasized the critical role of customs in national development and international security.

He outlined a comprehensive reform agenda designed to enhance the performance of the NCS, which includes improving welfare packages for officers, increasing training programs, and adopting digital technologies. The reforms aim to streamline trade processes, reduce cargo delays at ports, and boost economic growth, with revenue projections of 6.1 trillion naira for 2024 and 7.28 trillion naira for 2025.

Adeniyi noted that the NCS had made significant seizures valued at 59 billion naira, contributing to public safety. The reforms also focus on better compliance through data analysis and risk management, aiming to align the NCS with global best practices and enhance Nigeria's competitiveness in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
