Customs Seizes N6.7bn Worth of Cannabis in Ogun State

Afeni addressed the media in Idiroko, highlighting the adverse effects of the seized items, particularly cannabis sativa, commonly known as marijuana or Indian hemp. He expressed concern over the rising abuse of psychoactive drugs among the youth, which poses a significant threat to national security due to its potential influence on criminal activities such as armed robbery, banditry, cultism, kidnapping, and terrorism.

Afeni noted that the seizure of 26,002 parcels of cannabis is not merely a preventive measure but a response to an escalating drug-related crisis that is already overstretching the healthcare and rehabilitation systems in Nigeria. He emphasized the need for societal intervention to combat the drug crisis and mentioned the government's encouragement of local production to achieve self-sufficiency.
