Customs Seizes N18.96bn Cannabis in Vehicle Shipment

The Nigeria Customs Service at Tincan Island Command intercepted a significant consignment of cannabis sativa valued at N18.96 billion, concealed inside imported vehicles. Commanding Officer Frank Onyeka disclosed that the operation was based on coordinated intelligence efforts in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The contraband was found in a shipment marked Hamu 429961 from Canada, falsely declared to contain U.S. vehicles. A thorough examination revealed 185 jumbo bags of cannabis hidden within a 2010 Toyota Camry and a 2023 Chevrolet, totaling 9,450 packages with a combined weight of 4,729 kilograms.

Onyeka described the seizure as a major breakthrough, emphasizing the importance of inter-agency cooperation in combating drug trafficking. This operation follows a formal agreement signed on April 27, 2026, aimed at enhancing intelligence sharing and joint operations between the Nigeria Customs Service and NDLEA.

Onyeka reaffirmed the commitment to safeguarding national security and public health against illicit drugs.
