Dakuku Peterside Advocates for Green Maritime Practices

Dr. Dakuku Peterside, the former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), called for maritime stakeholders to adopt decarbonisation and sustainable shipping practices during a keynote address at a webinar organized by Naturehedge in collaboration with several institutions, including the West Africa Green Economic Development Institute (WAGEDI) and the Sustainable Energy Practitioners Association of Nigeria (SEPAN).

He stated that green maritime is essential for enhancing competitiveness and profitability, rather than being merely an environmental obligation. Peterside noted the shipping industry's transformation due to stricter environmental regulations and investor demand for sustainability.

He highlighted the importance of integrating decarbonisation, digitalisation, and innovation into business models to thrive in a competitive market. He also mentioned the upcoming International Maritime Organization (IMO) carbon-intensity rules in 2026 and the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) as critical factors for compliance.

The webinar attracted various stakeholders, indicating a growing interest in sustainable maritime operations in Africa.
