Nigeria's Corruption Ranking Drops to 142nd in 2025 Index

According to the 2025 Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index, Nigeria has slipped two places to rank 142nd out of 182 countries, maintaining a score of 26 out of 100. This score indicates a decline in the perceived level of public sector corruption, underscoring the slow progress in addressing this issue.

In comparison, Nigeria scored 24 and ranked 150th in 2022, and 154th in 2021, marking its worst performance under former President Muhammadu Buhari. The country's best ranking in the past decade was 136th in 2016 with a score of 28.

The report highlights that corruption remains prevalent across various public institutions, affecting governance and service delivery in sectors such as security, health, power, and the judiciary. The effectiveness of anti-corruption agencies like the EFCC and ICPC is questioned, with calls for greater independence to enhance their operations.

The judiciary's corruption is particularly noted as a significant barrier to eradicating corruption, leading to public disillusionment with the justice system.
