Dangote Dominates Nigeria's Petrol Supply with 71% Share

In August, Dangote supplied approximately 35.87 million litres of petrol daily, accounting for 71% of Nigeria's petrol receipts, according to figures from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) reported by Punch. This heavy reliance on a single refinery raises concerns about the potential impact of maintenance or equipment failures on fuel availability for motorists and businesses.

Although Nigeria imported an average of 14.6 million litres of petrol daily in August, down from 19.7 million in July, the existing imports do not guarantee a quick replacement in case of disruptions. The Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries recorded no production during this period.

Marketers face challenges in replacing lost production, which involves securing financing, shipping arrangements, and storage facilities. Even if production halts temporarily, the refinery may still supply petrol from storage, but the duration of these supplies depends on available stock and the speed of production resumption.
