Domestic Refineries Supply 75% of Nigeria's Petrol in 2026

In the first seven months of 2026, domestic refineries in Nigeria, primarily the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, accounted for 74.9% of the country's petrol supply, providing approximately 7.41 billion litres of petrol. This represents a 73.5% increase from about 4.27 billion litres in the same period of 2025.

Conversely, petrol imports declined significantly from approximately 6.58 billion litres in 2025 to about 2.48 billion litres in 2026, a decrease of 62.3%. The total petrol supplied between January and July 2026 was approximately 9.89 billion litres, with domestic refineries displacing imports as the dominant source.

In 2025, imports made up 60.6% of the petrol supply, while domestic refining contributed 39.4%. The analysis by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) indicated that domestic refineries supplied an average of 25.8 million litres per day in July 2026, compared to 19.7 million litres from imports.
