Nigeria High Commission in South Africa Faces Power Disconnection Over Unpaid Bills

The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa faced a power disconnection by the City Power Electricity Distribution Company due to unpaid bills. The Mayor of Tshwane City, Nasiphi Moya, announced the disconnection as part of a municipal service cut due to outstanding debts.

This is not the first time the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has been plunged into darkness over unpaid electricity bills. In a related development, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) disclosed in its third-quarter 2025 report that Nigeria supplied electricity to Togo, Benin, and Niger, invoicing a total of $25.36 billion but with significant unpaid balances of $11.56 million.

The NERC also noted that domestic bilateral customers had a better remittance performance compared to international customers. Additionally, the report revealed that Nigeria's 11 electricity distribution companies remitted a total of $381.29 billion to the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) in the third quarter of 2025.
