Dealers Release New Price for Cooking Gas, Data Shows States With Highest, Cheapest Costs

The latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics reveals that cooking gas prices in Nigeria have increased for the fifth consecutive month, putting pressure on household budgets. The cost of refilling a 5kg cylinder in May saw a significant jump in June 2024, with the average refill cost now higher than last year.

States like Oyo, Plateau, and Yobe currently offer the lowest 5kg refill costs, while Niger has the highest average cost. Nigeria, despite being Africa's largest oil producer, imports much of its cooking gas, making local prices susceptible to global market fluctuations.

Experts warn that without major investments in domestic gas processing, storage, and distribution, prices will remain unstable. Some Nigerians are resorting to creative solutions like sharing refills to cut costs, while businesses are feeling the impact of rising gas bills.

The recent reduction in LPG prices at a major refinery and NNPC filling stations offers some relief, but long-term solutions are needed to stabilize prices and meet growing demand.
