Malawi Stuns Nigeria 3-2 in WAFCON 2026 Opener

In a stunning upset at the WAFCON 2026 opener held at Rabat’s Al Madina Stadium on Tuesday night, Malawi's National Women's Football Team defeated Nigeria’s Super Falcons 3-2. The Super Falcons, who have won the tournament ten times, dominated the first half but failed to score.

The match intensified in the final twenty minutes, starting with Temwa Chawinga scoring in the 73rd minute, followed by her sister, Tabitha Chawinga, who doubled the lead six minutes later. Nigeria's captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, converted a penalty in the 90th minute, giving Nigeria hope.

However, Temwa Chawinga scored again in stoppage time (90+6’), restoring Malawi's two-goal lead. Uchenna Kanu assisted a goal nine minutes into added time, bringing the score to 3-2, but Nigeria could not complete the comeback.

Following this defeat, the Super Falcons will face Zambia on Saturday, where they must secure points to stay in contention for qualification.
