Senate Warns Delay in Defense Budget Release Could Hamper Anti-Terror Fight

The Senate, led by former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, has cautioned against delays in releasing the defense budget, emphasizing its impact on the fight against insecurity in Nigeria. During a session on the 2026 defense budget, the Senate Committee on Defense expressed concerns about the potential setbacks in tackling activities of kidnappers, bandits, and terrorists if funds are not promptly disbursed.

General Christoph Musa of the Ministry of Defence echoed these sentiments, stressing that delayed funding undermines the government's efforts to address security challenges effectively. Despite acknowledging persistent security threats, Musa assured lawmakers of the ministry's commitment to enhancing its performance.

Additionally, the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee raised alarms over gross underfunding, a concern highlighted by the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation.
