INEC Chair Warns ADC Against Unauthorized Convention

Joash Amupitan, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), issued a warning to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) regarding their plans to hold a national convention without the commission's oversight. During an interview on Arise TV, Amupitan emphasized that such actions could lead to grave legal consequences, potentially invalidating the election results.

He referenced a specific court order that directs political parties to refrain from actions that could undermine ongoing legal proceedings. Amupitan noted that the INEC's decision to issue this warning was not arbitrary but based on prior court directives.

He cautioned that defying the court order could result in the declaration of the candidate with the second highest votes as the winner, referencing past incidents in Zamfara and Plateau states where non-compliance with court orders affected electoral outcomes. Amupitan acknowledged the ADC's right to choose its leadership but stressed the importance of adhering to legal protocols to avoid crises.
