INEC Chair Warns ADC Against Unsupervised Convention

Joash Amupitan, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), warned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) against proceeding with its planned national convention without the commission's supervision. This warning was issued during an interview on Arise TV on Friday.

Amupitan's caution follows the ADC's intention to hold a convention despite INEC's refusal to recognize the leadership faction led by David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola. He emphasized that INEC's position is not arbitrary, as it is rooted in existing court orders involving the party.

Amupitan highlighted the risks of the ADC ignoring these court orders, drawing parallels to previous electoral experiences, such as the situation in Zamfara State, where elections were nullified due to non-compliance with legal rulings. He reiterated that the ADC retains the freedom to make its own decisions but must acknowledge the legal framework governing electoral processes to avoid jeopardizing the credibility of the electoral system.
