Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a 54-year-old Deputy Director employed by the Delta State Ministry of Secondary Education, died following an incident that took place at his commissioner's office in Asaba. Law enforcement authorities in Delta State have taken one suspect into custody—Lucky Adoh—while actively searching for two additional individuals: Enos Attah and Oputa Okestine.
The announcement came Friday from police spokesperson Bright Edafe, who confirmed their connection to the death. Conflicting narratives have emerged regarding the events in question.
An altercation allegedly occurred at the Prof. Chike Odozien Secretariat involving Commissioner Kingsley Ashibogwu, according to numerous accounts. Some witnesses claim Adeda sustained beatings during this confrontation, which included the commissioner's driver and police orderly.
The commissioner himself has rejected these allegations, stating he played no role in any assault against the deceased. Following the altercation, Adeda required hospital care and subsequently passed away on Friday.
The death prompted swift labour action. On Friday, the Nigeria Labour Congress mobilized workers to occupy the Delta State Secretariat, closing access points and disrupting routine administrative work.
Union members demanded a thorough inquiry into the circumstances of Adeda's death and guarantees protecting workers at their jobs. The NLC then announced a comprehensive strike throughout Delta State, instructing its membership to cease work without delay and formally registering a grievance against state authorities.
Ramifications have extended throughout the workplace and beyond. Secondary education ministry staff in the state have experienced significant disruption due to the unrest triggered by this fatality.
Ongoing police investigations are pursuing the remaining two suspects. This matter has raised considerable alarm among labour organizations and civil service workers throughout Delta.
