CSOs Demand Immediate Development for Makoko Safety

Civil society organizations, represented by Comrade Nelson Ekujumi, called for the immediate development of Makoko during a media conference in Ikeja, Lagos. They urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu not to abandon plans to develop the area, which is home to an estimated 80,000 to 250,000 residents living in precarious conditions.

The coalition, comprising 80 organizations, highlighted the dangers posed by high-tension power lines and unplanned structures, which threaten public safety. They criticized the Lagos State Government's past demolition efforts between 2005 and 2012, which they claim failed to address the community's needs.

The coalition expressed concerns over the government's recent demolition of structures near power lines, alleging insincerity and violation of agreements regarding safety distances. They called for adequate compensation for victims affected by demolitions and emphasized the need for sincere engagement with the community to ensure safety and preserve lives.
