Lagos Lawmakers Visit Makoko Amid Residents' Outcry Over Demolitions

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly visited the Makoko waterfront settlement following concerns over forced evictions and demolitions. Residents, including schoolchildren, appealed for government intervention to protect their homes.

The government insists on demolitions due to safety concerns regarding structures near high-voltage power lines. Chief Emmanuel Shemed described the situation as a humanitarian crisis, with residents being rendered homeless.

Lawmakers, led by Adebayo Adefuy, urged calm and announced a temporary suspension of further demolition activities pending a decision by the Assembly. The visit aimed to assess the situation on the ground and find solutions for the affected waterfront communities, demanding rebuilding and adequate compensation for displaced families.
