Lagos State Government Clarifies Demolition of Makoko Community for Safety and Urban Development

The Lagos State Government has clarified the demolition of the Makoko community and other affected settlements as a strategic move to safeguard lives and properties. The Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, emphasized that the intervention was necessary to prevent disasters, improve safety, and ensure the long-term resilience of Lagos as a mega city.

The demolitions were particularly targeted at structures erected beneath high tension power lines and along critical waterways to avert potential catastrophes. Special Adviser on Urban Development, Olajide Babatunde, explained that the demolitions were in line with safety assessments and urban planning regulations.

The affected communities are being engaged in a five-year relocation plan to modern estates to avoid future conflicts and ensure compliance with regulations.
