FG and Labor Discuss King’s College Concession Controversy

The Federal Government of Nigeria and organized labor representatives met to discuss the controversial concession of King’s College, Lagos, which could disrupt academic activities across Federal Unity Colleges. The meeting took place on Monday and involved Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa and representatives from the Trade Union Congress and the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria.

Education workers have threatened to shut down Federal Unity Colleges and halt the 2026/2027 academic session due to opposition against the government's decision to hand over management of King’s College to the King’s College Old Boys’ Association under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement. Dr Alausa clarified that the college was not sold or privatized, asserting that the government retains legal ownership.

He emphasized the importance of dialogue and the need to consider the national interest. Acting Permanent Secretary Dr Folake Olatunji-Davies assured unions that staff would remain civil servants and could choose to stay or transfer to other schools.

A transition committee will be established to coordinate the process.
