Federal Government Confirms King’s College Management Unique

The Federal Government clarified that the proposed management arrangement for King’s College in Lagos, which involves the King’s College Old Boys Association (KCOBA), will not be applied to other Federal Unity Colleges across Nigeria. This statement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, during a news conference in Abuja.
He informed labor unions that the King’s College arrangement is an isolated case, assuring that the government will continue to fund the rehabilitation of other unity colleges. Alausa mentioned that approximately $20 million has been repurposed from a World Bank-supported program for school rehabilitation, with 20 unity colleges already selected for intervention.
He noted that the decision regarding King’s College was influenced by severe infrastructure decay and KCOBA’s willingness to invest through a non-profit foundation. The estimated cost for fully rehabilitating Federal Unity Colleges in the South-West region is nearly N100 billion.
The government is also exploring alternative funding mechanisms to address infrastructure deficits.
