Detained Soldier Dies in Army Custody Amid Neglect

Hudu, a soldier with service number 09 6 44 4682 attached to the 223 Light Tank Battalion, was reportedly detained in October 2023 for alleged self-defense. His health began to deteriorate on April 4, 2026, while in military detention.

Sources claim that despite his illness, military personnel allegedly turned him away when he sought medical attention and dismissed his complaints. Fellow detainees expressed alarm over his worsening condition, but no immediate action was taken until protests were raised.

Hudu was finally taken for treatment on April 16, 2026, but he was confirmed dead the following day, April 17, 2026. This incident has raised concerns regarding the treatment of detained soldiers and the transparency of disciplinary processes within the Nigerian Army.

Additionally, another detainee, Solomon Gideon, reportedly faced severe health issues, including near blindness, yet military authorities continued to impose strict disciplinary measures against him.
