El-Rufai Seeks N15.6bn Damages from ICPC

Former Governor Nasir El-Rufai has filed a petition with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), demanding N15.6 billion in damages. The petition, dated March 4, 2026, was submitted by his law firm led by Ubong Akpan.

El-Rufai's legal action follows his detention by the ICPC on February 18, 2026, and is not his first legal dispute with the anti-graft agency. He previously filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit against the commission after a raid on his residence.

In his latest petition, El-Rufai alleges offenses including defamation, abuse of office, forgery, and malicious prosecution, claiming violations of his fundamental rights. The breakdown of the damages sought includes N5 billion in compensatory damages, N5 billion in exemplary damages, N5 billion in aggravated damages, N500 million for injury from falsehood, and N100 million for the cost of action, totaling N15.6 billion.
