US Military Trainers Arrive in Nigeria for Counter-Terrorism

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) of Nigeria confirmed the arrival of 100 United States military trainers at Bauchi airfield as part of a new security cooperation agreement. Defence spokesman Samaila Uba stated that this deployment follows a formal request from the Nigerian government for military training, technical support, and intelligence sharing.

The US personnel will serve strictly in an advisory and training capacity, not as combat troops, and will conduct joint training exercises with Nigerian forces. This initiative aims to enhance Nigeria's ability to deter terrorist threats and protect vulnerable communities nationwide.

The deployment comes amid diplomatic strains following criticisms from US President Donald Trump regarding Nigeria's handling of insecurity, particularly concerning attacks linked to Islamist groups. The US Africa Command, led by General Dagvin Anderson, confirmed the deployment to support intelligence operations against various armed groups, including Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province.

This cooperation is expected to significantly strengthen Nigeria's counter-terrorism operations.
