Diagnostics Essential for Nigeria's Healthcare System

On Thursday, Dr. Iziak Adekunle Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, addressed the 2026 National Summit on Diagnostics held in Abuja.

He described diagnostics as the foundation of modern healthcare, stressing that strengthening diagnostic capacity is essential for an efficient and credible health system. Dr.

Salako noted that accurate and timely diagnoses are crucial for disease prevention, early detection, effective treatment, and continuous patient monitoring. He reaffirmed the global significance of diagnostics, stating that clinical decisions depend heavily on diagnostic results.

The theme of this year's summit focused on transforming Nigeria's diagnostic landscape to ensure resilient and sustainable healthcare delivery for all Nigerians. He emphasized the need for an integrated and coordinated diagnostic system, which is vital for quality healthcare delivery across various levels, from primary healthcare centers in rural communities to tertiary hospitals in major cities.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of infrastructure, effective partnerships, skilled workforce, laboratory networks, regulatory oversight, and sustainable financing in strengthening diagnostics.
