Nigeria's Diesel Imports Reach 244.9 Million Litres

In July 2026, Nigeria's diesel supply was predominantly reliant on imports, totaling 244.9 million litres of automotive gas oil, as reported by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority. Modular refineries contributed a mere 18.35 million litres, representing only 2.5% of the total diesel supply of 731.6 million litres for the month.

WalterSmith led modular refineries with a daily average supply of 341,000 litres, while Aradel and Edo Refinery supplied 144,000 and 107,000 litres respectively. The performance of modular refineries was hindered by inadequate crude feedstock, as highlighted by Eche Idoko, Publicity Secretary of the Crude Oil Refineries Association of Nigeria, who noted that these refineries could meet over 10% of Nigeria's diesel needs if supplied with sufficient crude.

The absence of output from NNPC’s three refineries further exacerbated the situation, with Port Harcourt Refining Company shut down and Warri and Kaduna refineries not producing.
