FAAN's Cashless Payment Reform Set for 2025 Launch

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is implementing a cashless payment reform to enhance revenue collection and improve operational efficiency at airports. The initiative aims to block revenue leakages and is part of a broader national digitization effort.

The pilot phase, which includes Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja, is expected to increase revenue collection by 50% and aims for a 75% integration of payment points. However, initial rollouts have revealed operational strains, including delays in electronic transfers that can extend wait times significantly.

FAAN plans to launch contactless payments in September 2025, but the transition to a fully cashless system requires careful sequencing and public readiness. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) supports this cashless agenda, encouraging similar reforms across public institutions.

Effective communication and gradual implementation are crucial to minimize friction and ensure compliance.
