Diphtheria Outbreak in Jos North Claims 23 Lives

A suspected outbreak of diphtheria in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State has claimed at least 23 lives within three days, with health authorities reporting 117 confirmed cases. Mr. Baks Bulus, the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer for Jos North, confirmed these figures, which were also acknowledged by Hon. Nicholas Ba’amlong, the Plateau State Commissioner for Health.

Bulus expressed concern over the rapid spread of the disease, which is caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae and primarily affects the nose and throat. The infection spreads through close contact, particularly via shared personal items.

Vaccination is crucial, as fully vaccinated children experience milder symptoms compared to unvaccinated or partially vaccinated children, who face a higher risk of severe illness or death. Health personnel have been deployed to affected communities to enhance surveillance and public awareness.

Residents are advised to maintain hygiene and seek medical attention promptly. The University of Jos has developed a vaccination for diphtheria, and the Jos University Teaching Hospital can diagnose the infection.
