Ikeja Electric Warns of Power Cuts Over TIN, NIN Deadline

Ikeja Electric, a Nigerian electricity distribution company, has issued a public notice warning customers to provide either their Tax Identification Number (TIN) or National Identification Number (NIN) by February 20 to comply with a new tax law. Failure to do so may result in invoice invalidation and potential disruptions in electricity supply.

The new law mandates that invoices, including electricity bills, must contain at least one verified identification number for tax audit purposes. Ikeja Electric emphasizes the mandatory compliance for both postpaid and estimated bill customers to avoid service interruptions.

The company states that invoices generated without the required identification numbers will not meet the new tax regime's standards. Kingsley Okoti, the Head of Corporate Communications at Ikeja Electric, clarified that prepaid customers are not affected by the directive.

The move aligns with broader efforts to implement the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and enhance tax compliance. Ikeja Electric has faced scrutiny from regulatory bodies like the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) for alleged non-compliance and denial of electricity to compliant customers.
