Nigerian Tax Authorities Introduce New Tax ID System Linked to NIN for Compliance

The Nigerian tax authorities, including the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) and Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS), have launched a Nigerian Tax ID portal to assign unique 13-digit numbers to taxpayers, linked to their National Identification Number (NIN). This system aims to enhance tax administration and compliance, emphasizing that the Tax ID is strictly for administrative purposes and will not affect bank accounts.

Taxpayers are encouraged to retrieve their Tax ID promptly to comply with the new tax laws effective from January 1, 2026. Additionally, Nigerian banks will start charging stamp duty on electronic money transfers above N10,000, following the implementation of the Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL).
