Ogun Assembly's Safe Termination of Pregnancy Bill Gains Support

Stakeholders at a public hearing on the proposed Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026, expressed strong support for the bill, recognizing it as a well-conceived initiative aimed at reducing maternal mortality and protecting healthcare professionals. Key participants included Dr Azeem Ashimi, former Chairman of the State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association, Nurse Bello Adejoke from the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, and Oba Morufu Adebayo, the Onitafin of Otafin.

The stakeholders emphasized the need to clarify legal ambiguities surrounding safe termination of pregnancy to prevent delays in patient care and to ensure that only licensed professionals provide such services. Dr Tomi Coker, the State Commissioner for Health, stated that the legislation would safeguard women's health and provide access to mental health services for those affected by unwanted pregnancies.

Wahab Haruna, Chairman of the House Committee on Health, highlighted the bill's aim to prevent maternal deaths from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. Speaker Oludaisi Elemide noted the need for a legal framework to address unregulated abortions.
