IGP Tunji Disu Urges Politicians to Avoid Electoral Crimes

On September 21, 2026, Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu issued a stern warning to politicians and their supporters against engaging in electoral misconduct, such as hiring thugs, vote buying, and threatening voters and electoral officials, in preparation for the 2027 general elections. Disu delivered this message at the sixth conference and retreat for senior police officers held in Owerri, Imo State.

He stated that the police would not tolerate electoral offences and would collaborate with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate and prosecute offenders, regardless of their political status. Disu urged politicians to compete with ideas rather than violence and introduced a six-point framework aimed at enhancing police preparedness for the elections, which includes improved intelligence, training, and community engagement.

The event was attended by notable figures, including Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume.
