IGP Tunji Disu Issues Strong Warning Ahead of 2027 Elections

On September 21, 2026, Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu issued a stern warning to politicians and their supporters regarding electoral misconduct as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. Speaking at the sixth conference and retreat for senior police officers in Owerri, Imo State, Disu condemned the use of thugs, vote buying, and threats against voters and electoral officials.

He stated that the police would not tolerate such offences and would collaborate with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate and prosecute offenders, regardless of their political status. Disu emphasized that mere arrests would not be sufficient; those apprehended would face trial.

He urged Nigerians to vote peacefully and report any wrongdoing. Additionally, he introduced a six-point framework aimed at enhancing police readiness for the elections, focusing on intelligence, training, inter-agency cooperation, communication, community engagement, and neutrality.
