Agbese Warns Against Politicizing Niger Delta Pipeline Contracts

Philip Agbese, the deputy spokesperson for the House of Representatives, warned stakeholders against politicizing pipeline surveillance contracts in the Niger Delta. He stated that such politicization could fragment current arrangements, undermine national security, and erode recent gains in oil revenue.

Agbese's comments followed renewed agitation from groups in the oil-producing region seeking to decentralize surveillance operations, which are currently managed by private security firms, including Tantita Security Services Nigeria. He acknowledged concerns regarding equity and inclusion in pipeline protection, asserting that the surveillance contracts should not be reduced to a tool for political patronage.

Agbese emphasized that the management of pipeline security is crucial for Nigeria's economic stability and urged stakeholders to prioritize national interests over regional entitlements. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced approach to operational effectiveness and inclusivity, warning that introducing inefficiencies could create security risks and exploit gaps in the system.
