DR Congo Advances with World Cup Plans Amid Nigeria Protest

DR Congo is advancing with its plans for the 2026 FIFA World Cup intercontinental playoff, despite an ongoing protest from Nigeria concerning the eligibility of a Congolese player who allegedly made an improper switch of nationality. This protest follows DR Congo's victory over Nigeria's Super Eagles in a penalty shootout (4-3) during the African playoff final last November.

The DR Congo squad for the next phase consists of 26 players, and the matter is pending an official resolution. Head coach Bastien Desabre expressed confidence in the team's ability to secure qualification for the World Cup, highlighting their scheduled travel to Mexico for the playoff match, which will take place in Guadalajara.

Six teams will compete for the final two places in the expanded 2026 World Cup, with DR Congo set to face either Jamaica or New Caledonia in the playoff final on March 31, aiming for their first World Cup appearance since 1974.
