FIFA to Decide on Nigeria's World Cup Petition by Feb 16

FIFA is expected to deliver a ruling on Nigeria's petition concerning the 2026 World Cup qualification against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) on February 16. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) filed a complaint after the Nigerian national football team lost 4-3 on penalties to DR Congo in the African playoff final held in November 2025.

Nigeria alleges that six players from DR Congo participated ineligible due to recent changes in international eligibility rules. NFF General Secretary Moham Sanusi expressed confidence in the strength of the federation's case, and the Nigerian football community is eagerly awaiting FIFA's final decision.

If FIFA rules in Nigeria's favor, the Super Eagles could be reinstated and have the opportunity to compete in the intercontinental playoff scheduled for March, as Nigeria seeks to secure one of Africa's remaining spots for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
