Duke-Abiola's UN Secretary-General Campaign Gains Support

The campaign for Akasoba Duke-Abiola's candidacy for the United Nations Secretary-General position asserts that support is growing across Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Dr. Jenny Clarence, Chief of Global Outreach for the Akasoba Duke-Abiola United Nations Secretary-General Campaign, stated this in a Thursday release, highlighting networks linked to the African Policy and Research Consortium (APRC) as part of the backing for Duke-Abiola's bid.

Duke-Abiola, a lawyer and human-rights advocate, is the widow of Chief MKO Abiola, who was declared the winner of Nigeria's June 12, 1993 presidential election. The campaign noted that support is emerging from countries such as South Africa, Rwanda, Egypt, Barbados, Chile, and Kenya.

However, Duke-Abiola is not listed among the eight officially nominated candidates for the position, as the UN requires nominations from member states. The formal nomination process began in November 2025, with the latest candidate being Ivonne Baki, nominated by Tonga.
