Ahunna Eziakonwa Sworn in as UN Under-Secretary-General

Ahunna Eziakonwa was sworn in as the UN Under-Secretary-General in a ceremony held in New York, marking the start of her tenure in this senior position. Eziakonwa expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her and stated that her priorities include contributing to peace, sustainable development, and opportunities for Africans.

Following her swearing-in, she met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss enhancing cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union, focusing on advancing Africa's development agenda globally. Their discussions included Africa's role in global financial reforms, strengthening regional economic integration, and leveraging opportunities from green and digital transitions for the continent's benefit.

Eziakonwa is committed to amplifying Africa's voice on the global stage. Prior to this appointment, she served as Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator, and Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa at the United Nations Development Programme from August 2018 to June 2026, and held various leadership roles in UN missions across Africa.
