INEC to Conduct Mock Election for 2027 Polls Testing

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced plans to conduct a mock presidential election as part of preparations for the 2027 general polls, which are scheduled for February 20, 2027, for the presidential election and March 6, 2027, for the governorship and state assembly elections. INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja, stating that the exercise aims to test the commission's electronic transmission system and restore public confidence in electoral technology.

He noted that past technological failures had damaged public trust and emphasized the need for thorough testing before implementation. Amupitan also warned political parties to prepare in accordance with the law and adhere to timelines to avoid violence and ensure transparent processes.

He addressed concerns about rising electoral costs, dismissing claims that the 2027 elections would cost N1 trillion and denying reports of plans to build hospitals with electoral funds. The commission is also required to issue election notices at least 360 days before the polls, as mandated by the Electoral Act 2022.
