INEC Promises Best Elections in Nigeria's History for 2027

At a town hall meeting organized by civil society groups in Abuja, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), declared that the upcoming 2027 presidential elections would be the best in Nigeria's history.

He acknowledged that while perfection in elections is unattainable, significant improvements in the electoral process are expected. Amupitan highlighted the challenges of electronic transmission of results, citing logistical issues and the need for credible management of the electoral process.

He mentioned that INEC plans to conduct nationwide mock elections to ensure seamless transmission of results across state lines. Additionally, he addressed concerns regarding technical glitches experienced during the 2023 presidential elections, asserting that such issues would not recur.

Samson Itodo, the Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, criticized certain provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 that allow for manual transmission when electronic systems fail, urging lawmakers to amend these clauses to enhance transparency and limit human interference in the electoral process.
