Earthquake in Indonesia Displaces 12,800, Kills 54

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday, resulting in 54 fatalities and over 100 injuries. By Monday morning, the number of displaced individuals had reached 12,800, primarily on Flores island.

Berton Suar Pelita Panjaitan, spokesman for Indonesia’s BNPB national disaster agency, reported that many residents are camping at schools and government offices due to fears of aftershocks, which have exceeded 1,600. Mbay resident Junaidin expressed frustration over the lack of government aid, stating that survivors received no tents, food, or medical supplies.

The Indonesian Air Force is responding by delivering 13 tonnes of emergency aid via Hercules planes and helicopters, including food, clothing, and clean water. Despite these efforts, residents like Siti Saudah Daso voiced disappointment over the slow arrival of assistance.

Search and rescue operations continue, with officials confirming no missing persons but ensuring thorough checks in the affected areas.
