Fire in Papua, Indonesia, Claims 11 Lives Including Children

A devastating fire occurred in the town of Paniai, located in Central Papua, Indonesia, shortly after midnight on Monday, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals, including six children aged between two and nine years old. Local police spokesman Henry Manurung reported that the fire quickly spread to several shophouses and lasted for more than three hours, despite the efforts of firefighters who deployed fire trucks and water cannons.

The intense blaze destroyed at least 40 kiosks and houses. During the inspection, authorities found the victims with burn injuries, comprising five adults and six children.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are currently underway, with Manurung noting that the close proximity of the structures contributed to the difficulty in extinguishing the flames. Deadly fires are not uncommon in Indonesia, with previous incidents resulting in significant casualties.
