Ebonyi Assembly Condemns Illegal Mining by Greenfield

Ify Nwakpu, the Chairman of the Ebonyi State House Assembly Committee on Solid Minerals Development, condemned the illegal and unsafe mining activities conducted by Greenfield Metal Company in Ihetutu, Ivo Local Government Area. During an oversight visit, Nwakpu ordered the immediate closure of the company for engaging in illegal ground mining activities.

He expressed concern over the company's failure to present relevant documents, including an Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Impact Audit Report, and a Community Development Agreement. Nwakpu highlighted the detrimental effects of the company's operations on the lives and properties of citizens, particularly in the host community of Ihetutu.

He stated that the company would remain sealed until it complies with mining laws. Other committee members, including Abiri Godwin Abiri and Hon. Stephen Orji, echoed these concerns.

Nwakpu also commended compliant companies for adhering to safety laws and urged the state governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, to continue supporting responsible mining practices.
