Ebonyi CSOs to Sue EEDL Over Alleged Overbilling Issues

The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Ebonyi State has announced plans to initiate legal action against Eastland Electricity Distribution Limited (EEDL) over allegations of overbilling and arbitrary disconnection practices. During a press conference held in Abakaliki, the coalition's leader, Prof.

Joseph Agbo, who is also the chairman of the Human Rights Volunteer Corps (HRVC) Ebonyi chapter, stated that consumers in the state have been subjected to estimated billing practices that do not reflect actual meter readings. He accused EEDL of disconnecting customers without prior notice and refusing to provide prepaid meters, which has left many consumers with outstanding debts based on these estimated bills.

The coalition, which includes various human rights groups, has exhausted all mediation efforts without receiving a satisfactory response from the electricity distribution company, prompting them to consider litigation as a means to seek justice for affected consumers.
