Defence Minister Praises ECOMOG's Role in West Africa

On Thursday in Abuja, Gen. Christopher Musa, Nigeria's Minister of Defence, acknowledged the sacrifices made by Nigerian and other West African troops during the civil wars in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea-Bissau, stating they were vital for maintaining peace and regional unity. He urged African nations to unite to prevent further disintegration of the continent.

Musa spoke at the unveiling of the book "Fighting Bushfires: ECOWAS and Peacemaking in West Africa," which chronicles ECOWAS's peacekeeping efforts. He shared personal experiences, revealing that he lost ten coursemates from the Nigerian Defence Academy during the Liberia conflict.

Musa emphasized the importance of recognizing these sacrifices and challenged the narrative that foreign powers were solely responsible for restoring peace in Liberia and Sierra Leone. He insisted that Africans must document their own history to accurately reflect their contributions to conflict resolution.

Musa concluded by stating that such publications are crucial for assessing the region's successes and failures in peacekeeping.
