ECOWAS Under Diop: Focus on Unity and Sahel Engagement

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has commenced a new chapter with a renewed focus on regional unity and engagement with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) as General Birame Diop officially took office as President of the ECOWAS Commission. Diop succeeded Dr. Omar Alieu Touray during a handover ceremony in Abuja.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by ECOWAS, particularly following the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the bloc, but stressed the necessity of continued cooperation due to shared geography and common threats such as terrorism and irregular migration. Diop's administration, confirmed by the Conference of Heads of State and Government at its 69th Ordinary Session in July, aims to rebuild cohesion within ECOWAS while addressing the political crisis in Guinea-Bissau, with Senegal designated as a facilitator.

He highlighted the need for innovative funding and the importance of unity among diverse member states as ECOWAS approaches the completion of its Vision 2050 implementation.
