Faye's Visit to Mali Signals Hope for ECOWAS Reconciliation

Just days before officially assuming leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Senegalese President Diomaye Faye undertook a diplomatic mission to Mali. This visit is perceived as an effort to mend relations between ECOWAS and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), particularly amid ongoing tensions with the military governments of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

Faye, elected Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government during the 69th Ordinary Summit in Abuja, is addressing one of the most significant crises in ECOWAS's history due to the withdrawal of these three countries. During discussions in Bamako, Faye emphasized the importance of dialogue despite political disagreements, aiming for regional peace and economic integration.

Although no formal announcement was made regarding Mali's return to ECOWAS, the meeting was described as constructive. The visit also reflects concerns that the separation between ECOWAS and AES could hinder efforts to combat terrorism and promote regional cooperation.
