ECOWAS Declares State of Emergency in West Africa Due to Recent Coup Attempts

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across West Africa due to recent coup attempts and heightened instability. President Omar Tourai made the announcement during the 55th session of the ECOWAS Security Council held in Abuja on December 9, 2025.
