ECOWAS Declares State of Emergency in West Africa Amid Surge in Coups

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency in West Africa following a series of coups and worsening insecurity. President Omar Tourai announced the decision during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council in Abuja.

The region faces high risks due to recent military interventions in countries like Guinea-Bissau and Benin, stalled political transitions, electoral exclusions, and the rise of terrorist and criminal networks. Tourai highlighted the urgent need for security investments and collective action to address these challenges and promote peace and stability in the region.
