ECOWAS Parliament Targets Universal Rural Electrification by 2030

The ECOWAS Parliament convened in Dakar, Senegal, to address rural electrification, aiming for universal access to clean and reliable energy by 2030. The session, led by Speaker Hadja Memounat Ibrahima and Fourth Deputy Speaker Hon Billai Tunkara, emphasized that renewable energy should be a key driver for economic transformation in rural areas.

Hon Gui Mariu Sagna presented alarming statistics showing that despite West Africa's rich solar, wind, and hydro potential, energy access remains a significant challenge, undermining healthcare and education. The joint committee meeting highlighted the adverse effects of energy deficits on agriculture, which is vital for the region's economy.

Nigerian Senator Ali Ndume urged West African governments to commit financially to renewable energy infrastructure. Maimouna Sidib from EBID revealed that the bank would prioritize solar mini-grids and hybrid energy plants to attract private investment.

The committee also called for external climate financing to build local manufacturing industries rather than relying solely on imported technology.
