ECOWAS Trains Journalists to Combat Misinformation

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is conducting training for journalists across the sub-region to combat misinformation and disinformation, which are considered threats to peace and democracy. The initiative was announced during the first ordinary session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja.

ECOWAS President Tourai explained that the training aims to develop a common approach to tackle the menace of fake news in West Africa. He reaffirmed the organization's commitment to regional integration and emphasized the importance of citizen-focused governance to build a peaceful and prosperous West Africa.

Tourai disclosed that the region's economic growth is projected to improve by 5% in 2024, 6% in 2025, and 7% in 2026. He also highlighted ECOWAS's major interventions in peace and security, including diplomatic initiatives in troubled areas and the establishment of a counter-terrorism force.

Additionally, he mentioned that 5.3 million vulnerable citizens would benefit from ECOWAS humanitarian interventions, particularly in conflict-affected and disaster-prone communities.
