ECOWAS Trains 500 Journalists to Combat Fake News

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has initiated a training program for 500 journalists aimed at combating fake news and misinformation across the sub-region. Dr.

Tourai explained that this initiative is crucial for maintaining peace and democracy in West Africa, given the dangers posed by misinformation. The training is part of a broader strategy to tackle the threats of fake news, which can destabilize the region.

Dr. Tourai reaffirmed ECOWAS's commitment to regional integration and emphasized the need for stronger cooperation among citizens and governments to build a peaceful and prosperous West Africa.

The region is projected to see economic growth improve to 4.3 percent in 2024, 4.8 percent in 2025, and 5.0 percent in 2026. Additionally, ECOWAS is working on humanitarian interventions benefiting 5.3 million vulnerable citizens affected by conflicts and disasters, while also expanding opportunities for youth and women through entrepreneurship support schemes.
